📝 How to Write Clear Steps

To help your customers or your team, it's important to write simple steps. Here are the rules we follow for every guide.

In 1 minute (beginner)

  • One action per step
  • Start with a verb
  • Put key elements in bold
  • End with the expected result

Rule 1 — One action per step

Never write two actions in the same step. Put each action on its own line.

Rule 2 — Start with an action verb

Each step should start with a clear verb: Click, Go to, Fill in, Save.

Rule 3 — Use bold for key elements

Put button, menu, and field names in bold so the reader spots them at a glance.

Rule 4 — End with the expected result

The last sentence of each step should say what is supposed to happen (e.g., "Your product is now online").

Example

  1. Go to Products.
  2. Click New product.
  3. Fill in the name and price.
  4. Save — your product is now online. ✅
